The Book

Written by Sonia Jenkins

The Invisible Midlife Woman is a book by Sonia Jenkins for women who can be capable, successful, needed and loved — yet still quietly wonder, “Where did I go?” It explores the expectations, responsibilities, health changes and identity shifts that can leave women feeling invisible in midlife, and invites them to begin coming back to themselves.

Have you become invisible in your own life?

You can be capable, successful, needed and loved—and still quietly wonder:

Where did I go?

The Invisible Midlife Woman is for the woman who has spent years looking after everybody and everything else and has begun to realise that somewhere among the responsibilities, expectations and endless “shoulds”, she's lost sight of herself.

This isn't a book about reinventing yourself.

It's about coming back to yourself—gently, in your own time.

Questions

What is The Invisible Midlife Woman about?

The Invisible Midlife Woman explores what can happen when a woman spends years being capable, dependable and needed, yet somewhere among the responsibilities, expectations and changes of midlife begins to wonder, “Where did I go?” It isn't about becoming someone new. It's an invitation to reconnect with the woman who was there all along.

Who is the book for?

It's for the midlife woman who may look perfectly capable from the outside but knows something doesn't feel quite right on the inside. She may be tired, overwhelmed, questioning what she wants, navigating changes in her body or simply wondering how a life so full of other people became one in which she feels strangely absent.

Why do women feel invisible in midlife?

Sometimes because they've spent years making everyone and everything else visible. Careers, children, partners, parents, households and responsibilities can gradually take up so much space that a woman's own needs, preferences and identity become quieter. She hasn't necessarily disappeared from other people's lives. She has become less visible in her own.

Is the book specifically about menopause?

No. Menopause matters, but it isn't the whole story of midlife. The Invisible Midlife Woman looks at the whole woman — her health, identity, relationships, responsibilities, emotional load and the expectations she has been carrying. Midlife changes deserve curiosity, not the automatic assumption that everything is “just menopause.”
